Planning permission usually expires after three years if work has not started on site, but due to the coronavirus pandemic many developments were put on hold.
New measures introduced automatically extends the deadline of any planning permission that would have expired between the start of the Coronavirus (Covid-19) lockdown and the end of this year, until 1st April 2021. It is hoped this will avoid projects having to go through the planning system again.
The government estimates that by the end of June 2020, more than 400 residential permissions providing more than 24,000 new homes would have expired. The new measures will help these developments and more resume as the economy recovers.
