Biodiversity net gain (BNG) refers to the concept of leaving the natural environment in a better state than before and in a manner that provides lasting benefits. It is hoped that the current loss of biodiversity through development will cease, and ecological networks restored.

Mandatory biodiversity net gain as set out in the Environment Act applies in England only by amending the Town & Country Planning Act (TCPA) and is likely to become law in 2023.

To help stakeholders prepare for mandatory BNG, Natural England has produced a short brochure which can be found here. The brochure summarises the approach to BNG and the opportunities it presents and what it might mean for developers, landowners and Local Planning Authorities.
